What is Chillar?
- Chiller is a device that controls the temperature by circulating a liquid such as water or heat medium as a cooling liquid whose temperature was adjusted by the refrigerant cycle.
- HVAC air conditioning systems are required in commercial buildings as a means of generating of cooling effects. The purpose is to offset building heat gained through many internal and external loads. Some of these loads for external influence include sun, wind and outdoor temperature heat. Indoor factors include moisture from people, lighting, and electrical or mechanical equipment.
- Chiller are installed in commercial buildings to achieve proper temperature control.
Two types of chiller
1. Water cooled chillers
2. Air-cooled chillers
Both water-cooled chillers and air-cooled chillers are refrigeration systems used to cool fluids or dehumidify air in both commercial and industrial facilities.
The components that make up water-cooled chillers and air-cooled chillers are very similar. Each product contains an evaporator, condenser, compressor, and expansion valve. The chief difference is in whether air or water is used to supply the condenser cooling.
Water cooled chillers
- A water chiller is a device used to lower the temperature of water. Most chillers use refrigerant in a closed loop system to facilitate heat exchange from water where the refrigerant is then pumped to a location where the waste heat is transferred to the atmosphere.
- Water-cooled chillers use water from an external cooling tower to reject heat from a gaseous refrigerant in the condenser before it undergoes a phase change into a liquid.
- Water cooled chiller systems have a cooling tower, thus they feature higher efficiency than air-cooled chillers. Water cooled chiller is more efficient because it condense depending on the ambient temperature bulb temperature, which is lower than the ambient dry bulb temperature.
Air cooled chillers
- Air cooled chillers absorb heat from process water, and the heat is then transferred to the air around the chiller unit.
- This type of chiller system is generally used in applications where the additional heat it discharges is not a factor.
- An air-cooled condenser uses ambient air to cool and condense the hot refrigerant gas back down to a liquid. It can be located inside the chiller or can be remotely located outside, but ultimately it rejects the heat from the chiller to the air.
- It has lower thermal efficiency, higher noise levels, and more sensitivity to ambient temperature and altitude.
How does the chiller system work?
Chillers operate on the principle of compression or absorption of a vapor. They are designed to provide a continuous flow of coolant to maintain a preset temperature. As the diagram shows, they are a continually circulating system of fluid that lowers the temperature by removing heat.
Chillers contain a chemical compound, called a refrigerant. There are many types of refrigerant and applications depending on the temperatures required but they all work on the basic principle of compression and phase-change of the refrigerant from a liquid to a gas and back to a liquid.
